i wrote the majority of this poem in the middle of the night, putting it into my phone whilst trying not to wake my partner Rich Batsford up. i think i was inspired by the film we saw the night before called Jindabyne, which was about some men who went fishing in the Kosciuszko National Park and found a dead Aboriginal girl on the first day, but decided to complete their fishing trip before reporting the incident. it is based on a short story called So Much Water So Close To Home, from the collection Furious Seasons by Raymond Carver and Paul Kelly wrote a song by the same title. Also we went to Tandanya an Aboriginal art gallery in Adelaide, South Australia a couple of days before and Kevin Rudd the Australian Prime Minister apologised to Indigenous Australians earlier this year while i was visiting Australia and i found it very moving, so with Reconciliation Week approaching, 27 May - 3 June, i thought it would be a good time to publish this. i hope you enjoy my take on things.
